turbinates

Airway warming structures

Turbinates are bony structures inside the nasal passages, covered with mucous membrane, that warm and humidify inhaled air.

Also called nasal conchae, they curl like scrolls from the side walls of the nose.

Swollen turbinates from allergies or infection cause nasal congestion: The doctor recommended surgery to reduce her enlarged turbinates.
