nasal septum

Nostril partition wall

The nasal septum is the wall of cartilage and bone that divides the nasal cavity into two nostrils.

It runs vertically from the bridge of the nose to the back of the nasal passage.

When the septum is significantly off-center—a deviated septum—it can cause breathing difficulties, chronic congestion, or frequent nosebleeds.

Surgical correction of a deviated septum is called septoplasty.
