adenoids
Behind the nose
Adenoids are a mass of lymphoid tissue at the back of the nasal passage, near the throat.
Like tonsils, they help fight infection in childhood but can become enlarged and cause breathing or ear problems.
Children with swollen adenoids often breathe through their mouth and speak with a nasal quality: The doctor recommended removing his adenoids.
The tissue typically shrinks by adolescence.
