jury
Verdict-delivering citizens
A jury is a group of citizens who hear evidence in a legal case and deliver a verdict.
In criminal trials, the jury decides guilt or innocence; in civil cases, liability and damages.
The jury deliberated for three days before reaching a verdict.
To jury-rig something is to improvise a temporary fix—a different word, from nautical use.
As a verb, to jury means to serve on or select for a jury, or to judge entries in a competition: a juried art exhibition.
