fundamental rights
Essential legal protections
Fundamental rights are basic liberties and protections considered essential to human dignity—typically enshrined in constitutions or international declarations.
These include freedoms of speech, religion, and assembly, along with protections against arbitrary detention and discrimination.
The court ruled the law violated fundamental rights.
Unlike ordinary legal rights, fundamental rights are treated as inherent rather than granted by government, and laws that infringe them face heightened judicial scrutiny.
