stiles
Rural barrier steps
Stiles is the plural of stile, a set of steps or a narrow passage allowing people to climb over a fence or wall while preventing livestock from crossing.
Common in rural Britain, stiles appear where footpaths cross farm boundaries: We climbed several stiles on our walk through the countryside.
A stile is also the vertical framing piece of a door or window panel.
