mortice

Hole for tenon

Mortice is a variant spelling of mortise, a rectangular cavity cut into wood or stone to receive a corresponding projection (tenon) from another piece, forming a joint.

The mortise-and-tenon joint is among the oldest and strongest methods of joining wood: The chair legs fit into mortices in the seat.

As a verb, to mortice is to cut such a cavity or join pieces this way.
