mortise lock
Recessed door mechanism
A mortise lock is a lock mechanism installed inside a rectangular pocket (mortise) cut into the edge of a door, rather than mounted on its surface.
Standard in commercial buildings and older residential construction, mortise locks are sturdier than cylindrical locks but require more complex installation: The carpenter chiseled out the mortise for the new lock.
