circumcision
Surgical prepuce excision
Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin from the penis.
It is performed on infant boys as a religious rite in Judaism and Islam, and is also practiced for cultural or medical reasons in many societies.
The procedure became routine in American hospitals during the 20th century, though rates have declined as medical consensus shifted toward viewing it as elective rather than necessary.
Female circumcision, also called female genital mutilation, involves removal of parts of the external female genitalia and is considered a human rights violation by international health organizations.
