option

One possible path

An option is a choice among alternatives: You have three options.

It also means the right but not obligation to do something—in finance, an option is a contract giving the holder the right to buy or sell at a set price within a specified period.

As an adjective, optional means not required: Attendance is optional.

To opt is to choose: She opted for the cheaper plan.
