Adonai

Divine name substitute

Adonai is a Hebrew word meaning "my Lord," used in Jewish tradition as a spoken substitute for the unutterable name of God (YHWH).

When reading scripture aloud, observant Jews say Adonai rather than attempting to pronounce the sacred tetragrammaton.

The word appears in prayers and liturgy: Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad ("The Lord our God, the Lord is one").
