closed shop

Mandatory membership employment

A closed shop is a workplace where employees must belong to a particular union as a condition of employment.

The term distinguishes this arrangement from an open shop, where union membership is optional.

Closed shops were common in mid-20th-century American labor but have been largely outlawed.

More loosely, closed shop describes any exclusive arrangement: Publishing used to be a closed shop—you couldn't get in without connections.
