Gilgamesh

Ancient Mesopotamian hero

Gilgamesh is the hero-king of ancient Mesopotamian mythology, protagonist of the *Epic of Gilgamesh*—among the oldest surviving works of literature.

The epic follows his quest for immortality after the death of his companion Enkidu.

The name evokes ancient heroic quests and humanity's earliest wrestling with mortality: a Gilgamesh figure searching for meaning.
