bard

Heroic tale teller

A bard is a poet, especially one who composes verse in traditional or elevated style.

The word evokes ancient Celtic poets who recited heroic tales and praised warriors.

Today it often carries a whiff of grandeur or irony: He fancied himself a bard of the suburbs.

Shakespeare is called the Bard of Avon, or simply the Bard.
