origins

Where things begin

Origins are the points from which things begin or arise—the sources, roots, or starting circumstances of something's existence.

A disease may have origins in contaminated water.

A person's origins are their ancestry, birthplace, or early background: She never forgot her humble origins.

The word nearly always appears in plural form; the singular origin works for a single source, while origins suggests multiple contributing factors or a broader sense of background and heritage.
