nymphs

Nature's minor goddesses

Nymphs are minor female nature spirits in Greek mythology, associated with particular locations or features—streams, trees, mountains, meadows.

They appear as beautiful young women, neither fully divine nor mortal.

The word extends to any beautiful young woman, and in entomology, to the immature form of certain insects that develops gradually rather than through complete metamorphosis: The dragonfly nymph lives underwater before emerging.
