tongue-and-groove

Board-joining wood joint

Tongue-and-groove describes a joint where one board has a projecting ridge (the tongue) that fits into a corresponding channel (the groove) in another board.

The interlocking design creates tight, flush connections for flooring, paneling, and siding: We installed tongue-and-groove pine throughout the cabin.

The term works as noun or adjective: tongue-and-groove planks, laying tongue-and-groove.
