scribing

Etching with tools

Scribing is the act of marking or cutting a line into a surface, typically wood or metal, to guide further work: He was scribing the boards before cutting them to fit the wall.

In carpentry, scribing means transferring an irregular contour—like an uneven wall—onto material so it can be cut to match precisely.

The word also covers the work of a scribe: writing, copying, or recording text.
