measuring
Finding the size
Measuring is the act of determining size, amount, or degree using a standard unit or instrument.
You measure distance with a ruler, ingredients with cups and spoons, time with clocks.
Beyond the literal, measuring extends to assessment and judgment: She was measuring her words carefully suggests deliberate restraint.
A measuring cup or measuring tape is a tool calibrated for this purpose.
To measure up is to meet a standard; failing to measure up means falling short of expectations.
