jaeger

Thieving polar seabird

A jaeger is a seabird that harasses other birds to steal their food, known for aggressive pursuit and piracy on the wing.

In American usage, jaeger typically refers to these birds (called skuas in British English).

The word comes from German for "hunter." Jägermeister, the liquor, uses the same root.

In military contexts, jaeger historically meant a light infantryman or sharpshooter in German and Scandinavian armies.
