musk ox

Shaggy tundra grazer

A musk ox is a large, shaggy-coated bovine native to the Arctic regions of North America and Greenland.

Despite its name, it is more closely related to sheep and goats than to oxen.

Musk oxen are known for their thick, insulating coats and their defensive behavior of forming a circle around their young when threatened by predators.

The name refers to the strong odor males emit during mating season.
