safari

African animal watching

A safari is an expedition to observe or hunt wild animals, especially in East Africa.

The word comes from Swahili meaning "journey." Modern safaris are typically photographic rather than hunting trips: We went on safari in Kenya.

The term extends to any expedition-style adventure: a whale-watching safari, an urban architecture safari. (Capitalized Safari is Apple's web browser.)
