beast
Savage, untamed animal
Beast means animal, but because it's an old word in English, we use it in particular ways.
We wouldn't call a pet a beast, except jokingly.
But we use beast for wild animals, or animals raised for work or food.
A beast of burden is an animal that labors—a horse, mule, donkey, or ox.
Beast suggests power and danger, so calling a person or problem a beast means it's formidable: That exam was a beast.
