A frigatebird is a large tropical seabird with long angular wings, a deeply forked tail, and a hooked bill.
Males are known for their striking red throat pouches, which they inflate like balloons during courtship displays.
Frigatebirds are remarkable aerialists that spend most of their lives on the wing, rarely landing on water since their feathers lack waterproofing.
They often harass other seabirds to steal their catches, earning them the nickname "pirate birds."
