bittern

Booming wetland bird

A bittern is a wading bird related to herons, found in marshes and reedbeds.

Bitterns are stocky with mottled brown plumage that camouflages them among reeds, where they stand motionless with bill pointed skyward when alarmed.

Males produce a distinctive booming call during breeding season.

The word also names the bitter liquid remaining after salt crystallizes from brine.
