ironwood

Exceptionally hard lumber

Ironwood is any of several trees with exceptionally hard, dense wood—so heavy it often sinks in water.

The name applies to unrelated species across different regions, united only by their remarkable hardness: The fence posts were ironwood, still solid after fifty years.

The wood resists rot and wear, prized for tool handles, bearings, and durable construction.
