sapwood
Tree's outer layer
Sapwood is the outer, living layers of wood in a tree trunk, between the bark and the heartwood.
It conducts water and nutrients from roots to leaves.
Sapwood is typically lighter in color and softer than the darker heartwood at the center: The sapwood was too soft to use for furniture.
In lumber, sapwood is often considered less desirable because it's more susceptible to decay and insects.
