agave

Desert rosette plant

Agave is a genus of succulent plants native to hot, arid regions of the Americas, characterized by thick fleshy leaves arranged in rosettes, often with sharp spines at the tips.

Several species are commercially important: blue agave provides the base for tequila, while others yield mezcal, sisal fiber, or agave nectar (a sweetener marketed as a honey alternative).

Most agave plants flower only once after many years, then die.
