hornbeam

Dense-wooded deciduous tree

Hornbeam is a hardwood tree of the birch family, known for its extremely dense, tough wood—the name combines "horn" (for hardness) and "beam" (an old word for tree).

The wood resists wear and has been used for tool handles, gear teeth, and butcher's blocks.

The tree itself is often planted as hedging, as it holds its dead leaves through winter: a hornbeam hedge along the property line.
