ironwoods
Extremely hard trees
Ironwoods is the plural of ironwood, any of various trees or shrubs with exceptionally hard, dense wood.
The name applies to dozens of unrelated species across different regions—desert ironwood in the American Southwest, hop hornbeam in eastern North America, lignum vitae in the Caribbean.
What unites them is wood so heavy it often sinks in water: The ironwoods of the forest were prized for tool handles.
