whiplash

Rear-ender souvenir

Whiplash is the snapping motion of a whip's tip, or by extension, any sudden back-and-forth jerk.

Most commonly it describes a neck injury from rapid acceleration and deceleration—typically in car accidents when the head snaps forward then backward.

Figuratively, whiplash describes the disorienting effect of abrupt reversals: The policy changes gave everyone whiplash.
