ding

Bell's brief cry

Ding is the sound of a bell or similar metallic ring—short, clear, and high-pitched: The elevator gave a ding.

It extends to any brief alert tone: My phone dinged with a notification.

To ding something is to make a small dent or nick: I dinged the car door in the parking lot.

A ding can also be a minor negative mark against someone: That mistake was a ding on his record.
