hydroplane

Lose road contact

A hydroplane is a boat designed to skim across the water's surface at high speed, its hull lifting almost entirely out of the water.

The term also names a horizontal fin that controls a submarine's depth.

As a verb, hydroplane describes a vehicle losing traction when water builds between tires and road surface: The car hydroplaned on the wet highway and spun out.
