dragster

Quarter-mile speedster

A dragster is a vehicle built or modified for drag racing—short, straight-line acceleration contests.

Purpose-built dragsters are long, narrow machines with oversized rear tires and powerful engines, designed purely for speed off the line: The dragster covered the quarter mile in under four seconds.

The term also applies to street cars modified for racing.
