hydroplaning

Tires losing traction

Hydroplaning is when a vehicle's tires lose contact with the road surface due to a layer of water, causing loss of traction and steering control.

The tires essentially skim across the water rather than gripping pavement: The car started hydroplaning and I couldn't brake.

The same phenomenon affects aircraft landing on wet runways.

Also called aquaplaning.
