hoplites

Ancient armored soldiers

Hoplites were citizen-soldiers of ancient Greek city-states, heavily armed infantry who fought in tight phalanx formations.

Each hoplite carried a large round shield, spear, and sword, with bronze helmet and breastplate.

The name comes from their shield, the hoplon.

The hoplites locked shields and advanced as one.
