auxilia
Non-citizen Roman soldiers
Auxilia were non-citizen troops in the Roman military, recruited from conquered peoples and allies to supplement the legions.
They provided specialized skills Romans lacked—cavalry, archery, light infantry—and often served on frontier borders.
After twenty-five years of service, auxiliaries typically received Roman citizenship.
The singular is auxilium or auxiliary.
