Marathon
Ancient Greek battleground
Marathon is a plain in ancient Greece where Athenian forces defeated the Persians in 490 BCE.
According to legend, a messenger ran from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory, inspiring the modern footrace.
The site lies about 25 miles northeast of Athens. (Lowercase marathon is the footrace or any extended effort.)
