hemispheres

Earth's two halves

Hemispheres are halves of a sphere.

The term most often refers to the Earth's northern and southern hemispheres (divided by the equator) or eastern and western hemispheres (divided by meridians).

In anatomy, the brain's left and right hemispheres control different functions: The left hemisphere processes language in most people.

Any rounded half qualifies: the hemisphere of a dome.
