corpus callosum

Brain's central connector

The corpus callosum is the thick band of nerve fibers connecting the left and right hemispheres of the brain, allowing them to communicate.

It is the brain's largest white matter structure.

Surgical severing of the corpus callosum, once used to treat severe epilepsy, produces "split-brain" patients whose hemispheres function independently.
