suzerain

Dominant feudal lord

A suzerain is a nation or ruler that holds authority over another state while allowing it to retain some degree of self-governance.

The subordinate territory, called a vassal state, typically owes allegiance, tribute, or military support to the suzerain in exchange for protection or recognition.

This arrangement differs from outright conquest or annexation because the vassal maintains internal autonomy.

The Ottoman Empire acted as suzerain over several Balkan territories.

The term also appears in biblical scholarship to describe ancient Near Eastern treaty relationships.
