gables

Triangular wall ends

Gables are the triangular portions of wall between the edges of a sloping roof.

The shape is distinctive enough that gable describes any similar triangular architectural feature: a house with decorative gables, the gabled roofline.

A gable window sits within such a structure.

Anne of Green Gables takes her name from the farmhouse's green-painted gables.
