japanning
Glossy black coating
Japanning is the technique of coating surfaces with black lacquer to imitate Japanese lacquerwork, or the finish produced by this method.
The craft became fashionable in 17th- and 18th-century Europe for decorating furniture, metalwork, and small objects: a japanned tea tray, japanned cabinets.
The term now applies broadly to any glossy black enamel finish.
