parapets

Low defensive barriers

Parapets are low protective walls along the edge of a roof, bridge, balcony, or fortification.

Originally military—soldiers could shelter behind a parapet while firing over it—the term now mostly describes architectural features that prevent falls or hide rooftop equipment: The building's parapets gave the roofline a distinctive silhouette.
