seigniory

Lord's territorial authority

Seigniory is the domain or authority of a seigneur—a feudal lord.

The term covers both the territory itself and the rights that came with lordship: collecting rents, administering justice, demanding labor.

In Canadian history, seigniories were the large land grants along the St.

Lawrence River under French colonial rule.

Also spelled seigneury.
