seigneur

Manor's ruling noble

A seigneur is a feudal lord—someone who holds land and exercises authority over the people living on it.

The term appears most often in discussions of medieval France or French Canada, where the seigneurial system persisted into the nineteenth century: The seigneur collected rent from tenant farmers.

The word carries connotations of aristocratic privilege and paternalistic control.
