day

Calendar's smallest square

Day designates the smallest unit of time that is a natural phenomenon and not one determined arbitrarily, as second, minute, and hour are.

Day technically designates the 24-hour period in which the earth makes a rotation around the sun, from one midnight to the next.

In ordinary discourse, however, day often represents some dedicated part of a day when light is present, such as the time that is devoted to work or school.

Day may also denote a period with certain characteristics, such as in the day of the steam engine.
