engraftment

Graft taking hold

Engraftment is the process by which transplanted tissue—typically bone marrow or stem cells—takes hold and begins functioning in a recipient's body.

After a bone marrow transplant, doctors monitor for signs of engraftment: the new cells establishing themselves and producing blood cells.

Engraftment usually occurs within two to four weeks after transplant.

The term extends to organ transplants generally, describing successful integration of donor tissue.
