watchful waiting

Deliberate patient observation

Watchful waiting is a medical strategy of monitoring a condition closely without immediate treatment, intervening only if symptoms worsen or specific thresholds are crossed.

Common with slow-growing cancers, benign tumors, and conditions where treatment risks may outweigh benefits: The doctor recommended watchful waiting for the small prostate tumor.

Also called active surveillance.
