spaying

Removing female ovaries

Spaying is the surgical removal of a female animal's ovaries and usually uterus to prevent reproduction.

The procedure is routine for pet cats and dogs: We're getting the kitten spayed next week.

Spaying also eliminates heat cycles and reduces certain health risks.

The male equivalent is neutering, though neuter sometimes covers both sexes.
